Highlights of the UNI Intellectual Property Policy*The complete policy can be found on the UNI Policies and Proceedures page: http://www.uni.edu/pres/policies/1003.shtml Technology Transfer is one of the primary goals of the Intellectual Property Committee, IPC and the Office of Intellectual Property, OIP. The Intellectual Property Policy was created to benefit society and the University through the encouragement of innovative technologies and creations as developed by University of Northern Iowa faculty, staff, and students. The policy was designed for the protection and management of these intellectual properties, IP. The IPC would like to stress that, “[t]he University will not assert ownership of copyrightable materials produced by faculty members as a part of their normal teaching or scholarly activities at the University unless University ownership is specifically provided for in a related agreement.” (UNI IPC policy, section D:1:a) Also important is the policy with respect to theses. As stated in the UNI IPC policy, section D:1:c, thesis copyrights are considered to be owned by the author, “however as a condition of a degree award, they must grant royalty free permission to the University to reproduce and publicly distribute copies of the thesis.” Section G of the policy provides assurance to the public that information about development and patenting of the IP created at UNI will be available to the public. Research and other information about IP development will be made available in the UNI Library, once IP rights have been claimed. This information can be located with the assistance of Rod Library Reference Librarians. |
