The University of Northern Iowa Distinguished Scholar Award, sponsored by the Graduate College and the Office of the Executive Vice President and Provost, honors eminent and distinguished artists and scholars among the UNI Graduate Faculty.
Senior scholars and artists with a long and distinguished record of publications, exhibits and/or creative activities while a member of the UNI faculty and whose professional reputation is national (and international where appropriate) are eligible for this award. Only a full-time tenured Regular Member of the Graduate Faculty with five years of full-time service at UNI may be nominated. The award provides the recipient with a $1000 account to support research and creative activity.
The nomination process must begin with the department or college graduate faculty. Materials are then submitted through the Department Head, or designee if the Head is being nominated. Nominations must include: (1) cover page; (2) letter of nomination by the nominator(s); (3) current vita; (4) personal statement by the nominee discussing his/her record of scholarly or creative achievement (not to exceed 500 words); (5) two letters of support; (6) Books and articles or appropriate examples of creative work must be submitted to supplement the written narrative. They will be retained in the Graduate College Office for review by the selection committee. Only one copy of each of these items is necessary. To fully inform and assist the selection committee’s decision, the nominee may add a paragraph narrative to each book and/or article, summarizing its impact on the nominee’s scholarly discipline.
One electronic copy of items 1-5 must be received in the Graduate College Office by 5:00 p.m., November 2, 2013. Single hardcopy samples of selected scholarly work (books, articles, creative works) should be submitted and will be kept in the Graduate College office for review. The 2012 - 2013 Distinguished Scholar Award will be presented at the annual Graduate Faculty Meeting in April.
A selection committee, chaired ex officio by the Associate Graduate Dean will be composed of two members of the Graduate Council, Chair of the Graduate Faculty, one Distinguished Scholar, and one regular member of the Graduate Faculty. Every effort will be made to provide widespread representation from among the academic colleges.
On April 11, 1991 (revised March 10, 1994, February 16, 2004 & March 22, 2012), the UNI Graduate Council adopted guidelines for the Distinguished Scholar Award. A copy of the guidelines is available in the office of each Dean, Department Head, and the Graduate College. For additional information contact Shoshanna Coon, Associate Dean (3-2748) or shoshanna.coon@uni.edu.
