Jenny Connolly

Jenny Connolly, second year Post Secondary Education: Student Affairs graduate student, was recently recognized as one of the winners of the Waterloo Couriers "20 under 40 award." The theme for this year's award was "Imagine the Possibilities" and was given to twenty men and women dedicated to making a difference in the Cedar Valley. Jenny and the other recipients were featured in the Cedar Valley Business Quarterly magazine and the Waterloo Courier.

Jenny completed her undergraduate career in History Education with an All-Iowa Endorsement at UNI. She quickly became a familiar face on campus as she was involved in numerous residence hall activities. Currently, Jenny's success has continued as a full-time student, Graduate Assistant for the Admissions Department, and part time employee at Fareway. Jenny is also a member of the Iowa State Board of Regents, Student Admissions Ambassadors, Graduate Student Advisory Board, Peer Instruction Team, and various university search committees.

Jenny Connolly and her husband, Scott, a local area teacher, are also active members in the community and devoted Panther fans. They hope to make the Cedar Valley their home as Jenny plans to pursue a local position in education upon graduation in May of 2008. Best wishes Jenny! Congratulations Jenny

============================================================Travel and Research Funding for Graduate Studetns

Graduate Student Travel Support Still Available
For Spring 2008

The Graduate Student Opportunity Fund provides travel support for current graduate students to present at academic conferences. The Graduate College is pleased to announce the availability of funding for conferences held during the Spring 2008 semester. Eligibility criteria, guidelines, and application form are available by clicking HERE. Applications are processed in the order received and must be fully completed to be considered.

Intercollegiate Academics Travel and
Research Funding
for Graduate Students

The Intercollegiate Academics Fund (IAF) is used to support academic related travel and research by students and is funded by student fee monies. Recently the IAF committee made changes to the fund and revised the guidelines for the 2007-2008 academic year.

First, the maximum amount a graduate student is eligible to receive has been raised from $300 to $500. The maximum amount a group can receive will be $7,500 (but no more than $500 per student).

Second, the maximum amount a graduate student may receive fudning for student research is $500. Students will also be eligible to apply for and receive funds from both sources in the same academic year, thus an individual student who conducts research in the fall and presents it at a conference in the spring could apply for up to $500 from each fund, for a maximum of $1,000 during the academic year.

The committee will continue to fund travel only for students presenting at conferences or academic competitions. For more information visit the Provost Office’s website. Click here to get an application form.

History

Jennifer Ostwinkle and Sharna Thomason, History Graduate Assistants at the UNI Museums, helped to organize thousands of historic Iowa rural school records in the fall semester of 2007. These records, some dating back to the 1850's, were recently donated from nearly 12,000 country schools all over the state of Iowa and contain a wealth of information. Both Ostwinkle and Thomason helped compile records in order to assist faculty and student researchers, as well as public genealogists, in their research and study of the rich history of education in Iowa.
