Funding Available for Graduate Students

Graduate Student Travel Support Available
For Spring 2008

The Graduate Student Opportunity Fund provides travel support for current graduate students to present at academic conferences. The Graduate College is pleased to announce the availability of limited funding for conferences held during the Spring 2008 semester. Eligibility criteria, guidelines, and application form are available by clicking here. Applications are processed in the order received and must be fully completed to be considered.

Improved Intercollegiate Academics Travel and
Research Funding
Now Available

The Intercollegiate Academics Fund (IAF) is used to support academic related travel and research by students and is funded by student fee monies. Recently the IAF committee made changes to the fund and revised the guidelines for the 2007-2008 academic year.

First, the maximum amount an individual student is eligible to receive has been raised from $300 to $500, in recognition of the rising costs of travel. The maximum amount a group can receive will be $7,500 (but no more than $500 per student).

Second, the IAF committee decided to extend its funding for student research for another year while setting the maximum amount a student can receive from this fund at $500. Students will now also be eligible to apply for and receive funds from both sources in the same academic year, thus an individual student who conducts research in the fall and presents it at a conference in the spring could apply for up to $500 from each fund, for a maximum of $1,000 during the academic year.

The committee will continue to fund travel only for students presenting at conferences or academic competitions. This is essentially a codification of existing practice because in recent years the committee has turned down requests to just attend conferences, prioritizing the applications of students participating in conferences or competitions. For more information visit the Provost Office’s website. Click here to get an application form.

Recap From the Recent IRB Workshop

Recently the Office of Sponsored Programs (OSP) and the Graduate College at the University of Northern Iowa cosponsored two sessions of Institutional Review Board (IRB) training for faculty, staff, and students. Attending the Fall semester IRB training sessions were 53 faculty and staff members and 89 graduate students from various departments.

The IRB training sessions were held to provide education on IRB guidelines and update attendees on current IRB work on campus. The workshop also included:

-an overview of historical events that gave rise to guidelines and legislation on human participant protection in research;
-the use of key ethical principles and federal regulations to protect human participants at various stages in the research process;
-a definition of informed consent and the components necessary for valid consent;
-the roles and responsibilities of federal agencies, IRBs, and researchers in conducting research with human participants;
-the regulations and criteria pertaining to which projects need review and the components necessary for approval;
-the forms and processes involved in seeking IRB review.

Anita Kleppe, Grant Specialist who coordinated this semester's IRB training sessions commented, “We would like to continue to conduct IRB workshops on an annual basis.” She also pointed out that more advanced IRB training is being planned and will be advertised for the spring semester, which may include specific topics of interest such as survey or qualitative research.
