Welcome Graduate Students

Dean Susan Koch

I’m delighted to welcome you to UNI!

It is the role of graduate education to explore and advance the limits of knowledge and to define the state-of-the-art in every field. Its purpose is to not only serve society’s needs for professional advancement and credentialing, but also to serve the need for intellectual expansion and interdisciplinary collaboration.

Graduate education in the United States and other countries is the major source for future intellectual leaders of schools, businesses, governments, organizations, and society. You are one of those future leaders -- one of a small select number of people in the world today who have an opportunity to participate in graduate education.

Our mission is to provide you with an outstanding experience of advanced study, research and creative activity that is grounded in a personalized and diverse graduate community and that will prepare you to be a successful practitioner, scholar, and professional leader.

You will have outstanding graduate faculty who will advise and mentor you along the way. Please make an effort to get to know them.

You will meet students with whom you can collaborate in your studies and who could become some of your best lifelong friends. Please make an effort to be part of our graduate community with the many opportunities available to do so.

You will be exposed to greater depths of knowledge, difficult intellectual challenges, and new ideas. Please engage as fully as you can.

Welcome and best wishes for a great year!

Need Help with Library Research?
Research Consultations are Available

Did you know that you can make an appointment with a reference librarian to consult about complex research projects? A librarian can help you to choose the best databases and print materials, to choose the best search strategy, and more.

For a group of students, an instructor can set up a class session. For help with shorter projects or any other assistance, contact librarians in person or via phone, online chat, or e-mail.

What Does That Mean?

As a new graduate student (this editor included), you may be scratching your head at some of the new terms you’re hearing. Check out The Chronicle for Higher Education for helpful definitions of graduate school terminology.

Stay Fit at the WRC

Expand Your Cultural Horizons

The Culture & Intensive English Program (CIEP) teaches English to international students at UNI. As part of the CIEP, each international student is matched with an American conversation partner. The partners then meet for one hour each week to exchange conversation in English. This opportunity allows international students to improve their English and to expand their understanding of American culture. At the same time, American students benefit by developing greater cultural awareness and understanding.
