UNI Graduate Education
Strategic Plan Unanimously Approved

Following an intensive five-month strategic planning process, the UNI Graduate Council has unanimously approved a new Graduate Education Strategic Plan. The plan, titled "Personal Goals, Personalized Excellence", includes the contributions and ideas of graduate students, faculty, staff, and administration from across the University. Commenting on the strategic planning process and its results, Dr. Susan Koch, Dean of the Graduate College, expressed gratitude for "the very serious commitment so many individuals made to this process and for all of their valuable contributions." "The plan," states Koch, "is both comprehensive and aspirational" and "sets a strategic direction for Graduate Education that will guide decision-making in the future."

The graduate students who participated in the process enjoyed the chance to contribute. The students felt that faculty and staff were open to hearing their perspectives. They also said they felt encouraged to freely express their ideas and enjoyed the ability to be heard. It was a great learning opportunity to be involved and see a strategic planning process first-hand.

The Graduate College, in collaboration with the five academic colleges and other divisions of the University are now moving into implementation of the plan. Click here to review the new Graduate Education Strategic Plan.

Believe it or not !!

Last November, Alimatul Qibtiyah, an international graduate student from Indonesia in the Women's Studies program, defended her thesis. The only difference between her and other graduate students defending their thesis was that while Alimatul Qibtiyah defended, she was also in labor!!

Graduate Student Opportunity Fund

The Graduate College is announcing the availability of the new Graduate Student Opportunity Fund for Spring 2006. The fund will support graduate students for participation in academic conferences and with expenses for research/projects associated with their thesis, dissertation, final research paper or other culminating graduate project. Inok Kalkwarf

From South Korea, Inok arrived in the US with her three kids with only three suitcases. When she arrived in the U.S., Inok didn't know English, but is fluent today.

She describes her family as a "team" growing up and experiencing the US as "we".

Through art, Inok has learned a lot about herself and has found confidence and pride.

International Profile

She attributes a lot of her personal as well as artistic growth to her UNI Art professors who she said showed extreme patience and understanding.

Art

After completing her MA in Art at UNI, Inok will further her education in the MFA program at the University of Iowa with a focus on sculpture.

Her motivation for her art has come from life experiences and cultural differences.

Her perspective on art: Without self-pride your art isn't going to be beautiful.

Graduate Student Spring Symposium

Depending on the response, the Graduate College will be sponsoring a scholarly symposium for all graduate students, combined with a reception honoring those who are receiving their graduate degree in May. This is a great resume builder and a perfect way to present your research, art, or musical piece.

Please submit interest to Michael Girsch at girschmp@uni.edu

Did You Know?

Of our 1,600 graduate students, 800 are full time.

80% of graduate students at UNI are from Iowa, with 20% from out of state.

Of that 20%, 10% are international students from 44 different countries.

67% are female

The first class of graduate students at UNI paid $40 per credit hour, or about $320 for their Masters degree.

The Results are in…

On Wednesday, November 30, 2005, some brave UNI graduate students met the challenge of Dean Koch and Assoc. Dean Joslyn of a bowl-off. Grouped into teams of four, if any team beat the score of the Dean's team, they would receive a pie from the kitchens of Dean Koch and Assoc. Dean Joslyn. Some happy graduate students received apple, banana cream, pumpkin and even raisin pies. Rumors of an upcoming challenge have been heard around the Graduate College.
