Distinguished Scholar Award

The University of Northern Iowa Distinguished Scholar Award, sponsored by the Graduate College and the Office of the Provost, honors eminent and distinguished artists and scholars among the UNI Graduate Faculty.

Senior scholars and artists with a long and distinguished record of publications, exhibits and/or creative activities while a member of the UNI faculty and whose professional reputation is national (and international where appropriate) are eligible for this award. Only a full-time tenured Regular Member of the Graduate Faculty with five years of full-time service at UNI may be nominated. The award provides the recipient with a $1000 account to support research and creative activity.

The nomination process must begin with the department graduate faculty. Materials are then submitted through the Department Head, or designee if the Head is being nominated, to the Academic Dean and the Associate Graduate Dean to the Graduate Council. Nominations must include: (1) cover page; (2) current vita; (3) summary narrative of the nominee's record of scholarly or creative achievement; (4) three letters of support from outside the University of Northern Iowa. Six (6) copies (original plus five) of the nomination materials must be received in the Graduate College Office by 5:00 p.m. Friday, December 7, 2007. Single copy samples of scholarly work (books, articles, creative works) will be kept in the Graduate College office. The 2007-2008 Distinguished Scholar will be announced the week of December 21, 2007.

The Graduate Council may select one Distinguished Scholar from the nominations received. If the distinguished record represents considerable collaborative effort, both individuals may receive the award. The Council may decide not to select any nominee. The Council will forward its selection to the Graduate Dean who negotiates and finalizes the appointment.

On April 11, 1991 (revised March 10, 1994 + February 16, 2004), the UNI Graduate Council adopted guidelines for the Distinguished Scholar Award. A copy of the guidelines is available in the office of each Dean, Department Head, and the Graduate College. For additional information and nomination forms contact Victoria DeFrancisco, Associate Dean (3-2748) Victoria.DeFrancisco@uni.edu.
